During
the Civil War, Jacob was a naval officer. Following the war, Jacob continued his maritime interests, sailing the Pacific ocean.
Then in 1868 , Jacob abandoned the sea and established J.L. Hayes on Main Street in Lewiston as a cement and lime business. Jacob was joined several years later by his younger brother Sylvanus, who became the grain merchant of the business
and was often addressed as Deacon Sylvanus, being Deacon of the Pine Street Congregational Church. Like Jacob, Sylvanus served
several years as a Lewiston city councilperson. Then with Jacobs passing on New Years day 1900, it was Sylvanus who carried
the business onto the 1900's.
